Life is too short not to be in the driver's seat and pursuing YOUR definition of success. Here we lay out guiding principles for reflecting on 2017, setting goals for 2018 and stepping out of the ordinary and into your best life.
8 simple step to success
As another year comes to a close, it’s a great time to reflect on 2017 and to look forward to what's ahead in 2018, with all of the opportunities and challenges it will bring.
Reflection can be a powerful tool when used the right way. Now, there’s a difference between really reflecting and causal thinking. I’ve learned that to gain the golden nuggets of insight into past events and actions, it takes genuine effort and focus.
Jumpstart the year by looking back
Whether you're reading this on New Year's Eve or any other time of the year, know that you are at a moment of great possibility. Because no matter where you are in your life, you have an opportunity to find what you love, become healthier, happier, earn more money, and grow as a person in a massive way.
Ask yourself this:
What would I like to achieve in the year ahead? Personally, professionally, socially?
What things are holding me back most from greater happiness?
What repeatable behaviors can I focus on as habits?
What sources of motivation can I use as my "why" to keep me going?
What approach can I take to help me achieve my goals more easily?
1) Remember you will die
This might first sound morbid, but understand your time is limited. The average life expectancy in America for men is 76 years old, and for women 81 years old. Granted, with modern technology our generation may live longer, but the fact is that life is that tomorrow is not guaranteed.
Remembering you have finite time ought to be a powerful motivator to get yourself to do whatever needs to be done. And if you don’t like the track you are on right now, that is fine! You still have time but you need to act on it - fast.
Life is too short to be living someone else’s story.
Whether you want to make changes or improvements to your career, health, relationships or sense of passion in your life, BestMe master coaches are here to help you plan and take these actions to get in the driver’s seat and make 2018 your year.
2) Create a personal challenge
Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder and CEO of Facebook, sets himself a challenge each year unrelated to his daily work. Famously, one of his challenges was learning Mandarin Chinese. Now, this example doesn’t mean you have to aim for something as demanding as learning a new language. The ball is in your court. Take it and do something about it!
The majority of people enjoy doing what they’ve always done. However, creating personal challenges for yourself that push your personal limits are the best way to look inside yourself and grow.
3) Get uncomfortable
How comfortable are you with being uncomfortable? There is little that provides such potential for growth as the willingness to get uncomfortable. Mark Twain - American writer, author and humorist - stated that life only begins when you get out of your comfort zone. He noted that disappointment would only come from what they did not do, rather than what they did.
Truly stretching your bandwidth will only come when you push your boundaries and do something that makes you uncomfortable. Being comfortable with being uncomfortable is not something you will ever regret. That’s a promise!
4) Live by your principles
What you believe is the rule of all your thoughts, words, actions, habits, values, and ultimately, your destiny. You MUST learn to create a set of principles that will guide you to wherever you want life to go.
It’s important that you then keep track of your thoughts and actions throughout the day to make sure they are aligned with your principles and life goals.
That voice inside of your head has much more impact on what happens in your life than you would ever believe. Put it to work for you, not against you, and connect that voice to the principles you really believe are part of your best life.
5) Take care of your health like your life depends on it
Imagine living a life of eating healthily, incorporating exercise or movement into your day, and spending time outdoors in open nature like your life depends on it. Now imagine that your life depends on it.
Living a healthy lifestyle can sometimes be taken for granted, but its importance can’t be overstated. Research from the CDC shows that 40% of chronic diseases in the US are preventable. You have the ability through the choices and habits you create every day to avoid conditions that can debilitate your quality of life.
“Remember you will die”, is a very powerful tool to ensure yourself to use your time wisely and do the impossible. But if you don’t take care of your health first, you can’t do the impossible.
6) Find your passion
The only thing worse than living a mediocre life, is living without passion. Think of a version of your life where you wake up daily full of motivation and energized by the day ahead of you everyday. Does this reflect your life right now?
Finding what you love has IMMENSE benefits. Not only will you gain inner motivation and productivity as long as you learn to focus your passion, but you will ultimately earn a lot of money over time. If you do what you love, people will notice and will gain motivation from you.
7) Consult a coach
You can reflect by asking questions and conversing with a mentor, a coach, or other people. Consulting with someone outside of your own head helps you to increase your awareness of where you are, what is working from you and opportunities for advancement. This potent habit is a cornerstone you will need to cultivate as you march towards self-improvement in the year ahead.
A powerful way to jump-start the year ahead for me is to reflect upon is to prioritize a few ways that you can be even happier, healthier and feel more fulfilled in 2018.
8) Take action right now
Don’t wait for permission to do something about it. Whether you wait for someone or something to give you the green light or go ahead and do something will determine your failure or success.
Julius Caesar liberated a Roman-held town in Asia Minor when he heard it was under attack with his private troops. Elon Musk founded SpaceX set sail for Mars, and began creating a rocket to achieve his goal. Neither Caesar or Musk waited for permission from the army or the naysayers. They took action and did something about it.
Most people stay in the comfort safety of their comfort zone, and when opportunities arise and ideas manifest they freeze or become too lazy to act. If you want success, you must take action right now!
You are right where you need to be
No matter where you are in your journey, know that you are right where you need to be, and that you have a great year ahead of you. If you’re not where you want to be, do something about it. NOW.
